Oh, the places you’ll go! There is fun to be done! There are points to be scored, There are games to be won!

The excerpt above is from the doctor Seuss book, The Places You’ll Go! And it fits the Dr. Seuss National Memorial in Springfield Massachusetts perfectly.

Dr. Seuse and the Cat in the Hat Statue

Statue of Dr. Seuse and the Cat in the Hat at the Dr. Seuss National Memorial

Theodore Seuss Geisel, better known to children around the world as Dr. Seuss was born in Springfield, Massachusetts and the Dr. Seuss National Memorial are now open to honor his place in the world of children’s literature.

Children will delight in the bronze sculptures that were created by Dr. Seuss’ stepdaughter, Lark Grey Dimond Cates. The sculptures can be seen at the corner of Quadrangle green, which is close to the Springfield Library. There are three unique statues:

1- A fourteen foot Horton the Elephant who is stepping out of a book is a delight to all visitors. Following close behind is Thing One, Thing Two, Sally, her brother, Sam-I-Am and Thidwick the Big-Hearted Moose.

2- A favorite to both the young and young at heart is the sculpture of Dr. Seuss and the Cat in the Hat. Children will love getting up close and personal to this fictional character.

3- The statue named, The Storyteller, depicts a book ten foot tall, which bears the text, Oh, the Places You’ll Go! Gertrude McFuzz sits on the top of the book while the Grinch and his dog lurk along the side.

In front of the Springfield Science Museum, you will find the Lorax standing on a stump. The warning Unless…, points to the museum’s efforts to educate people on preserving the Earth’s environment.

The Yertle Garden can be found next door to the Museum of Fine Arts. Here kids will find a ten foot statue surrounded by fantasy landscaping and beautiful winding paths. It’s a great place to allow the kids to run off some energy.
