The Delaware Shakespeare Festival - a travel USA review by Jane Szczepaniak

Founded in 2003, the Delaware Shakespeare Festival, provides a delightful way to spend a summer evening or afternoon cavorting outside with the Bard for less than the cost of a movie ticket.

The action takes place on the outskirts of Wilmington on the grounds of Archmere Academy, a private school located in Claymont, Delaware. The setting is one of well-manicured lawns by the banks of the Delaware River. It’s really just a perfect place to feel you have been transported into the woods along with Puck, Bottom, and the other members of A Midsummer’s Night Dream or with Rosalind and the company of As You Like It. The presentation changes yearly, so these may not be the actual characters you encounter but Will created plenty so you’ll be sure to meet some memorable ones whenever you go. And, lest you think this is simply a backyard performance, be assured that these actors are real pros with terrific credits.

The outdoor production itself is preceded by some swordplay or acting demonstrations at no extra charge. You can either bring blankets or lawn/folding chairs from which to enjoy the Shakespearean goings-on. Guests are also invited to tote picnics and enjoy dining on a blanket on the grounds before the curtain rises (although alcohol is not permitted). . There are even special date nights and family matinees. We’ve found it to be a great family outing and theater under the summer stars has become something our family has learned to savor,.(If it rains, there’s a fabulous performing arts center on the grounds where the action moves.

The summer is not the only time for the Delaware Shakespeare Festival to impact audiences. Indeed, Molly Cahill, founder and artistic director, indicates that even though the outdoor performances are limited to summer, the DSF hosts a theater camp and other off-site programs.

Delaware may be a small state but the Delaware Shakespeare Festival is a big find.

The Festival can be found on the net at www.delshakes.org
