Alpine, Wyoming is located in the northwest corner and is in what is referred to locally as the "Star Valley." Several golf courses are in the area, including the Cedar Creek Course, the three Creek Ranch courses, and the Teton Pines Golf Club, north of Alpine in neighboring Jackson. While the golfing may bring the traveler here, there are many other activities and attractions to experience when in this region.
Three Rivers
Alpine is located next to the Snake, Salt and Grey Rivers. Famous for its native species such as cutthroat trout, German Browns, Brooks, Mackinaw, rainbow trout, and the rare Kokanee salmon are caught in these rivers, which all converge just outside Alpine. Walking and hiking the rivers is a wonderful sight and something which should not be missed when visiting Alpine. The three rivers converge to make the Palisades Reservoir.
The Intermittent Spring
Alpine and Star Valley is home to one of only three intermittent springs in the world. An intermittent spring fluctuates in the water flow by an unseen source, typically from below ground. It gives a sight much like a breathing river. The intermittent spring found here is the largest in the world and steeped in native lore and legend. It has been said that the natives would travel huge distances to soak in the "spring that breathes" to cure their diseases and illnesses. Take time to go and soak and see this amazing sight. Go to Swift Creek (Second Avenue in Afton) to the Intermittent Spring. Wear good hiking shoes as the trail gets broken and rocky at the top.
Elk Refuge
A trip to the Elk Refuge, just one mile south of Alpine, gives the visitor a wildlife watching bonanza. The Wyoming Department of Game and Fish manages this refuge. The staff feeds 500 to 600 tons of hay to almost 1,000 elk each season. Bring your camera and binoculars for this wildlife treasure.
