
Nine Mile Canyon is located near Wellington, Utah. Hiking is permitted throughout the canyon or any of the adjoining side canyons. Hiking Nine Mile Canyon: How to get there
To get to Nine Mile Canyon, you can either head north on Highway 191/6 from Interstate 70 or east on Interstate 6 from Salt Lake City. Exit the highway on Soldier Creek Road, a bit south of Wellington. Drive along this road and you will come to Nine Mile Canyon's opening.
Hiking Nine Mile Canyon: The petroglyphs
Once you get to Nine Mile Canyon, you will want to see the ancient petroglyphs. This beautiful rock art was made by the Fremont Indians. There are many sites along the road with petroglyphs, most of which can be reached by walking along the hiking trails as well. Some petroglyphs can only be reached with a four-wheel drive vehicle or by foot. Be respectful when viewing the petroglyphs and do not touch the petroglyphs. Damaging the native petroglyphs can lead to prosecution under Utah's Antiquities Act, which protects all historical artifacts in the Nine Mile Canyon park.
Hiking Nine Mile Canyon: The trails
There are many hiking trails that split off of the main part of Nine Mile Canyon. Most of these side trails are not made for four-wheel drive vehicles and can only be traveled by foot. Daddy Canyon is one of the most popular side hikes you can take out of Nine Mile Canyon. There is a dry creek bed that runs through the breathtaking canyon. There is a picnic area, pit toilet facility, horse corral, and several petroglyphs near the entrance of Daddy Canyon.
Hiking Nine Mile Canyon: What to bring
Be sure to bring adequate equipment when hiking Nine Mile Canyon. Wear clothing that is appropriate for the expected weather. When in doubt, dress in layers so it is easy to remove or add clothing as necessary. If it will be sunny, bring a hat, sunglasses, and plenty of sunscreen to keep yourself protected all day. Carry at least 3 quarts of water per person in your hiking party, along with some snacks like granola bars, fruit, or trail mix. You may also wish to bring a digital camera to take pictures of the petroglyphs and the view of Nine Mile Canyon's walls.
