Many people don’t often think of Omaha, Nebraska as an up-and-coming metropolis waiting to be discovered. This original cowtown, founded in 1854, has come a long way in becoming one of the most dynamic cities in the U.S. The last few years alone have seen over 2 billion dollars in developments for Omaha, and its future seems very bright for more exciting business and tourism opportunities. While there are certainly too many attractions to name them all, the following are considered to be the top places to see in the Omaha metro area.

Henry Doorly Zoo is home to the world’s largest indoor rainforest and the world’s largest domed desert. A world-class aquarium, aviary, and wildlife safari are sure to please animal lovers of all ages. New additions include Hubbard Gorilla Valley, where visitors can get up close and personal with all varieties of monkeys and gorillas, and a “touch tank” that allow children to feel underwater creatures with their own hands! An IMAX theatre, train cars, and a large carousel add to the charm and uniqueness of this zoo.

Joslyn Art Museum, Nebraska’s largest art museum, has been named as one of the most favored among families and children in the nation. With art greats such as Karl Bodmer in its permanent collection and several rotating special exhibits each year, the museum is never the same experience twice! Joslyn features “Jazz on the Green” Thursdays each summer, where attendees can enjoy jazz performances free of charge.

The Old Market is perhaps the most well-known spot in Omaha. Featuring the best shops, cafés, restaurants, galleries, and clubs in original historic buildings, the Old Market is a treat for those wishing to know the heart of Omaha better. A thriving nightlife and unique shopping lend both excitement and charm to Omaha.

The Strategic Air and Space Museum fills 300,000 square feet of space with amazing war artifacts, flight simulation experiences, a library, theatre and snack bar. With displays from WWII and the Cold War, learning opportunities are made exciting and real. The museum features exhibits made especially for young enthusiasts as well.

While only a few of the many spectacular attractions in Omaha, these few stops represent the cream of the crop. It will only take one trip to the “Big O” to see that there is more to this Midwestern city than first meets the eye. Plan on being pleasantly surprised, and bring extra film for your camera!
